DIY Ruler/ Growth Chart

We would like to show you how to make a large oversized ruler that can also be used as a growth chart. (The “inch” markings are actually correct in how many feet it is...the “sixteenths“ lines are NOT accurate for inches however) These are a really neat way to keep track of your kiddo’s growth without marking up your door jams or walls. They are also great gifts for teachers and photographers.
We start with a 8 foot pine board that we cut down to 6 1/2 feet. Lowes and Menards will cut the board down for you.
Next we stain the wood. We stain front and back so it looks nice & neat. Wipe off any excess with a rag. We use Minwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut.
Let the stain dry for a little bit...half hour or so.
Now your board is ready for the stencil. Be very careful to put your stencil on the correct way. When you have put the line marking stencil down in place, measure it to make sure the “inch”/ foot line is in the correct place. The stencil set comes with two line stencils. We usually just use one at a time, but you can use them together to do two feet at the same time. Continue painting the lines down the remainder of the board.
Now you are ready for the numbers. Line up the number stencil just before the “inch”/foot line mark. You can always reference to a real ruler for the correct look.
Continue painting all the numbers down the remainder of the board.
Just let it dry and it’s done!

Thank you for sharing. I have woodwork that I have marked 'growth' through the years with pencil and now I can't paint it -ever! I think this idea will be a great update for that area without losing any of the precious memories!
