Changing a room's color doesn't mean you need to change your furniture. We painted the living room a lovely gray and the fabric of some of the furniture needed updating. This ottoman I found at a resale shop is perfectly fine, I decided to completely recover it giving it a new look.

This project required enough fabric to recover and I selected chalk paint to transform the frame.

The first step is to remove the top. I used the current fabric to determine the amount of fabric needed to replace, making sure I had enough to account for the tufting. The original tufting used cotton to secure the waxed thread. I then began to remove the buttons.

I used two shades of paint to create a light, white-washed look. The first layer was a sample pot of paint from Lowes - Mushroom. The top layer was chalk paint - Amy Howard at Home Chelsea Square. I also painted the buttons with the mushroom paint.

While the frame dried I attached the fabric. I began to replace the buttons working from the center outward going row by row. I reused the cotton batting to draw tight the buttons for the tufting. Once the buttons were secure, I attached the fabric with staples and staple gun.

The last step was to reattach the top to the frame. This is a time consuming project working carefully with the buttons and tufting, but it is definitely a worthwhile, doable project!
