Did you know that you can turn scrap wood in your garage into a computer case? That's exactly what I did the other weekend. I really wanted a computer in my garage to aid in my various projects, but I didn't want a boring looking computer tucked away in a corner. So while looking around the garage for inspiration, my eyes settled on some scrap wood. I wondered if I could turn that pile of scraps into a computer case. The answer is yes!
So here's one way to turn a pile of scrap wood into a very functional computer.
My wooden computer case
This is what a weekend of work resulted in.
Basic computer design
Before getting started, it's helpful to know basic computer design.
Power supply holder
I start off with a base of plywood and attach wooden pieces with a combination of wood glue/finishing nails/wood screws.
Motherboard risers
Once the case is starting to take shape, I cut little wooden cubes to serve as motherboard risers (fixtures that hold the motherboard securely in place)
Fan brackets
Next I cut out some C shaped wooden fan brackets, used to attach the cooling fans.
The case is nearly done at this point. Fan brackets, motherboard risers, and compartments for the power supply and hard drive are in place.
Inside of case showing plexiglass
To kick things up a notch, I added in a rounded window for the side of the case. I cut a piece of plexiglass and attached it to the side with some bolts.
Polyurethane is your friend
To help protect the outside of the case, I applied several coats of polyurethane. It gave it a really glossy look and smooth to the touch.
Finally, it was time to install all the electronics.
Awesome LED lighting
As a final touch, I added in an LED light strip to illuminate the case at night.
Mounted in the garage
To use safely in the garage, I built a simple wooden mount for the computer and placed it high on the wall. I control the computer with a mini wireless keyboard/mouse.
