I wanted a custom look for my kid's headboard. The easiest way for me to get fabric AND a bed frame color that matches my room was to build it. I know most people don't feel comfortable building furniture. But if you do, I can show you step by step details for building and upholstering this bed - no sewing required!
And the best part is, you get to pick the exact fabric and stain or paint to match any room or style. So, go for Boho, French Country, a sports or princess theme...anything you'd like will work.
You can see the full DIY Steps and more pictures by visiting this post on my site.

A look at the upholstery steps for this headboard.
I designed this headboard to have legs wider than the metal frame. I liked that wider, chunkier look. But you can change the measurements to have the legs sit behind the frame instead. You can see my measurements on my site.
I used Kreg Jig pocket holes to connect the rails to the legs. You can see how I built the legs in the first video.
Glue, clamps, and brad nails were used to construct the legs and top of the headboard.
I filled all nail holes and pocket holes with wood filler and sanded smooth.
Here's a close look at the top of the headboard. 1 1/4" chair rail molding adds an extra bit of detail to this build.
Your padding, batting, and fabric are stapled down to a plywood backer for the upholstered back section.
Here's a look at the finished headboards in my kids' room. You can also see the full bedroom makeover reveal on my site. It's full of fun DIY projects!
Even T-Rex likes his new bed!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Are these headboards anchored to the wall? If so, what did you use? I've been looking at a similar idea, where the padding is secured to the wall ... Thanks!!
