Vintage Cedar Trunk Makeover

New clients came into our old shop about a year ago to chat about refinishing a trunk and they we're in the works of having their beach house built ... once the home was finished being built about a year later they went back to our old location to find out we had move... BUT they didn't give up and after google searching they found our new location and asked us to refinish their mothers cedar chest. They originally only wanted it chalk painted white... but after we chemically stripped the piece down to the solid wood we showed them how beautiful the natural wood is ... they changed their minds! Come see our process...
Here's the before photo... of our clients trunk that was delivered to our refinishing shop. The finish on the top was almost down to the raw wood. Their new home is a modern beach house style and the majority of their furniture is white and grey which this piece stood out and needed a "Superior Makeover".
We chemically removed the old finish off the chest using Dad's Easy Spray Remover then chemically cleaned and lightly sanded the surface using a finishing sander.
When we have brand new clients we like to make samples of different finishes. Here's the samples we did for them to come see. *they choose the top right sample*
We used Superior Paint Co. Barn Wood in a "wash" to lightly stain the wood by mixing 1 part Barn Wood Chalk Paint with 3 parts distilled water.
But we're not done yet... It was looking a little too "Beige" for their space so we applied Little White wash over top to lighten and brighten the piece.
After we applied the white wash finish we added soft highlights using a chip brush.
Now time for sealer... We applied 3 coats of Saman Flat Waterbased Varnish with our HVLP Sprayer.
Here's the products that made this project happen! Our Superior Paint Co. Chalk Paints (Barn Wood & Little White), Dads Easy Spray Remover and we sealed with Saman Flat Varnish using the Earlex HVLP 6900 Sprayport.
Of course there was a bunch of misc. shop materials: Drop Cloth, Safety Glasses, Gloves, Respirator, Sandpaper, Sander, 500 grit sanding pads, Staining Pads, Chip brush ect.
Now this treasure is ready to head back home!
