Hi there, other than wood or carpet there are basically two other choices either ceramic/stone or vinyl/linoleum. Personally I've always been kind of adverse to the stone or ceramic tile route just because it is SO HARD. Drop anything and it will shatter on impact and its tough to stand on for longer periods of time. Linoleum is pretty versatile these days and comes in wood look and tile look types.
Sisal matting. Plywood squares stained to your choice of colour.
Premium Luxury Vinyl or Ceramic tiles come in so many styles now and can really hold up to traffic. All much easier to maintain that wood and carpet.
You could go with concrete, laminate, linoleum, porcelain or ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, press and stick tile, marble, slate.
The new luxury vinyl that looks like wood is beautiful. It comes in planks, is water proof and a great choice if you have children or pets.
Think about sheet vinyl printed to look like wood - with an area rug on top.
