Power tools can be a bit intimidating. My very first power tool was a Jig Saw my mom gave me after I mentioned I wanted to make a custom headboard I'd seen on Pinterest. I was a little scared of it, but with a someone there to show me how to use it safely, I was empowered! I've now created countless projects using power tools and this amazing furniture transformation is just ONE of them! I teamed up with a Hometalker in my community who had wanted to transform a piece of furniture in her spare room for a while but needed a bit of help and guidance. With my help, we created TWO new pieces of furniture that she loved!

This cabinet made this guest room look lopsided as it was much too large for the space. What she really wanted was two side tables to go on either side of the bed, so we decided to transform this big piece into two functional pieces!
*NOTE* You should always DIY with SHOES on! But you're a grown up and can do what you want so make safe decisions!! ;-)

We started by measuirng and finding the center of the two pieces. This landed in the open shelf in the middle so we used the jigsaw to cut the piece right down the middle. We then measured a cut two pieces of plywood:

  • We took the top section ( the one with the doors) and flipped it over. We added the first piece of plywood on top to create a small open shelf area.
  • The second piece of plywood went on top of the open section (above the drawers). We attached these with screws.
After the boards were added to create finished pieces, we added feet on the bottoms. This really completed the look, and with the matching feet these two pieces really looked like a complimentary set!
You can find these little furniture feet in a sorts of styles at the hardware store. You buy the feet and the plates seperately and simply attach with a drill.
We then flipped the pieces over and admired our work! Not bad for 2 first time DIYers! And by up-cycling this piece we gave it new life! (times 2!)

Very cool. They look like they were meant to be. A matching set. Great share.
