I transformed a thrift store rug into a Native American style decor! It took a few simple steps and it was fun to do. Here's how I did it!
I bought this new 3 X 4 foot 100 % cotton rug at a thrift store. In fact two, a bath mat size one that I painted first. I then looked on line for Native American symbols to use on the rug. Then I traced them off for accuracy. I used the symbols to cut my own stencils from them.
I used a painters tape to mark my borders. Also on some of my stencils.
The fabric paint I used were from the craft store.
Everything on this rug represents something in my son's life. The three stick figures linked together represent the tree brothers. The two stick figures represents his wife and her sister. This is a personal rug for them.
The black stick drawings are from the paint sticks/pens. I did use store bought stencils for the four animals in each corner. They represent the animals that live in their immediate area.
Note: What looks like smears are shadows, not smears.

I have one given to me for my wedding. Problem how to clean it as I fear it will be torn.
