How to finish the fireplace front?
We have an air tight fireplace with a built in fan. Its like a black wood-burning stove that is surrounded by drywall so we don't see the black pipes going through the ceiling. We would like to cover the drywall with something other than brick. As it is a wood fireplace and heats our home, it gets pretty hot so we need something fireproof. Any suggestions?

You could ceramic tile it.
Dianne, I know just the stove you're talking about, I've always liked them. Look through these, quite a few of them are surrounded with different kinds of brick and stone. Maybe it will help you decide.

Are you currently using the stove? If so and the wall board hasn't caught fire, it was probably built to code (UBC) and you have 2 or 3 wall piping. If so, you can use anything you wish to cover the wallboard.
The most important part of what you said is that it gets pretty hot. If the piping was not enclosed correctly, you could potentially create a fire under whatever covering you want to put on it.
HI Dianne,
I'm Linda and I also suggest that you check with your local building codes. There may be a reason that it's covered the way it is. It's also possible that there is firewall material behind that dry wall. That's something you need to know before you move forward. Good luck!
You can buy the heat resistant tiles to go around a fireplace.
