Consult with a professional first just to get a ball park figure, but if you do it yourself, there will be no cost other than time and sweat. Have you considered leaving it and just giving it a make over such as a white wash? Just a thought.

If you do it yourself, nothing but time and a bit of mess. Use a Coal Chisel and a Bolster.
Are you just covering it up or removing the entire run, chimney. In our area fireplaces are considered a property improvement, adds value to the home, even taxed on it. Just something to consider.
Just the facing or entire fireplace/chimney completely gone???
