If you want to use a plastic tub...here are some thoughts, I am not sure what you are looking for ??? Cats won't want to jump high to get into it , and then jumping out will leave a mess of litter. If you want to not have a top on it , and use a carpet cutter to cut a deep opening on one side , so you have a high sides cat litter box , so there's less litter kicked out, that might work , but I think it might be unsteady when lifting it to clean it . If you just want to cut a hole in the side, and keep the top on , so it is a covered box , just know, it will hold the smells in, more, and your cat might not use it . Also some plastics hold smells more than others .Good luck
purchase the appropriate size for your area/cat -- multiple cats -- always provide 1 more box than you have cats!! ---- cut a round hole using a box knife or small key hole saw about 8" from the bottom of the bin; cut small ventilation holes in the cover to prevent ammonia build up. Some cat's don't like a covered box, but will use a deep one if spraying over the sides is an issue

I use black cement mixing tubs from Lowes,Home depot low cost, easy to clean, sturdy, wide enough for cats to move around in,low enuf for them to get in & out of. Just make sure you use large enuf container, have you ever used an enclosed porta potty? no one wants too, so remember that about cat using enclosed tub. That being said there are many different ways to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_KBWzHvNn4 MORE https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DIY+litter+boxes General info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34cHfvYOYS0
