Tips for Painting a Laminate Table & Chairs
Painting a laminate table and chairs wasn’t the easiest furniture makeover I’ve done, but I did learn some things along the way. I’m passing along a few tips to save you time and money on your laminate projects.
There are important steps to take to make sure that your laminate project turns out just like you want it to.
- Clean the furniture thoroughly with TSP and dry it with a lint free cloth.
- Prepare surface for painting by sanding. I used my palm sander with medium grit sand paper.
- Sand the surface enough to allow the primer to adhere.
It's important to use the correct primer. I used a water based primer and it was a mess. You can read about my mistakes on the blog post.
- Apply an oil based primer. I used Kilz Original Oil Based Primer and I used a small, smooth roller to apply. Allow the primer to dry over night.
- Repeat with a second coat of primer and allow to dry overnight.
- Paint surface with either oil based or latex paint. I used Behr Ultra Pure White Premium Plus.
- Allow paint to dry completely. I left mine overnight.
- Add a second coat of paint and allow it to dry overnight.
- Once the second coat is dry apply a sealer. I used Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish Crystal Clear Semi Gloss.
Since I learned from my mistakes with the table and didn’t repeat them, the chairs were easy to paint. The final step was to add the polycrylic protective finish.
I painted the table and chairs for my daughter who has a farmhouse style kitchen. The table looks great in the breakfast area of her new home. I love the way she’s styled it with metal chargers and white plates.
