Hi there, here's how my mom and I painted out her dark kitchen: https://www.grandmashousediy.com/kitchen-cabinets-white/
Kea...Clean the cabinets...sand any area that needs it or fill with putty. Let dry, then primer and paint after. You can purchase paint with primer in it and and eliminate a step.
Hi Kea. There are a lot of great paints out there now that will stick to cabinets. Make sure to give them a good clean with a degreaser like a water based TSP or Krud Kutter and then give them a light scuff with some sandpaper and paint. You can prime them if you are worried it might not stick if the surface is covered in anything. Tips for Painting Kitchen Cabinets
HI Kea!
Wash the cabinets down well with Murphy's Oil Soap and then start the painting process.

Hello,
Well if a job is worth doing, then it's worth doing well! If you don't have the cash then invest in elbow grease. If you do have some cash, Board over the doors and maybe drawers and then decorate! If you have neither time nor money, live with it as it is, until you have a bit of either to be able to do a good job!
i just painted my kitchen cabinets from black to white. Clean with a degreaser. Do not waste your $ on the most expensive brand name paint. This caused me a lot of double painting aggravation chipping and peeling on cabinets. There is another brand at a hardware store i used on walls paint and primer in one also which was cheaper and covered much better. even putting a primer first for paint that has primer in it did not do anything more. also suggestion put on molding for shaker doors. You do not need skill you need a saw regular pencil and one of those $10 things to cut straight. no i do not own any electric saws. filler is good for errors.
You could use sandpaper or various
grades of steel wool to blend the edges
to a smooth finish
I used the Rustoleum cabinet kit on a bathroom cabinet four years ago and it’s held up wonderfully.
I agree with John. At least sand down all visible parts to bare wood, then stain and seal, but ideally, it would be best to do all parts of the cabinetry, or save up and replace. You can always shop Craig's list and cabinetry resale shops, or check with remodelers who may be happy to have you take what they're removing from someone else's home. So long as their kitchen layout would work in your space, it would be worth the savings over buying new from a cabinet shop.
Clean the furniture with soap and water, let dry. Then use a chalk paint, at least 2 coats. Then apply a wax for longevity. Happy painting.
Please don't use chalk paint and wax on kitchen cabinets. It is not really washable and won't hold up with the daily use of a kitchen.
I saw this link on Hometalk. www.beyondpaint.com check it out.
Warnings aside, I still love chalk paint for mostly one-coat, no-sanding, inexpensive (make-it-yourself) paint. Clean, sand rough areas, paint, dry, touch up, enjoy.
Gm, I just had my very old kitchen cabinets painted , actually first coat was regular paint and that worked and then actuall kitchen paint over that so far so good
Hi Kea! I can tell you how to paint your kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint! :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: If the surface is slippery, apply two coats of Slick Stick or if you're concerned about bleed thru, apply BOSS
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step four: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent and durable finish
No sanding required! https://simplytodaylife.com/painting-kitchen-cabinets-with-chalk-paint/
