What kind of ugly space? If it's a wall, thumbtacks work well. If it's an open space (like a closet or between rooms), a curtain rod would work. If you need it to be something you can move on a curtain rod, you can either slit the ends of the large hem and use that as a rod pocket or you can make small holes (or buttonholes, if you have a sewing machine) along the smaller hem and use shower curtain rings. If the space is too long for an affordable curtain rod, you can even use a piece of 1x2 lumber and the round kind of shower curtain rings. (It will look nicer if you paint the wood.) That sort of wood can hang on simple cup hooks.
If you give a little more information and maybe even a photo, I can try to give better advice.
Use a curtain rod and hang some nice curtains or a tapestry
Sheets can be used to divide a room into two areas by simply adding a curtain rod at ceiling height. You can cover ugly walls by dipping the sheets into liquid starch and applying the sheet to the wall as if it were huge sheet of wallpaper and it can be removed easily by spraying with water when and if you want to change the design.
Cassandra, if you need to cover a storage space with a sheet: some people use a spring loaded rod to put through the top of the sheet and attach it at the roof to two walls. We did this in college and there are many sheets now with many colors and designs so it looked nice. I hope this helps. In another home my husband used a dowel rod with supports on each wall and put the sheet over the dowel rod. We fastened it so we could reuse the sheet if we needed it in the future.
I've used sheets to curtain windows and doorways. Use a rod that fits your space. The hem on a sheet usually is big enough to put a rod through a shower curtain rod works in alcoves.
Mount curtain rods near the ceiling and hang your sheets on them.
