A small bench with hooks over head and storage in the bench as well as over the hooks can help and not take up much room. Here is a photo of what we did for our front area storage and we do not have a foyer, but this fits nicely behind the front door and is convenient. The photo was cut off, but the top above the board and hooks also has bins for scarves, hats, gloves etc.

I used a cubby to hold shoes. We use the top ones for school books (we homeschool). I have baskets on the top now for library books, store returns, etc
