Not sure I totally understand your question but paint is always a nice option when it comes to changing up furniture. You could also sand the whole piece down and stain it in a whole different color too.
Hey Sandra,
Hoping you get a notification from this to let you know someone replied to this question, so you can maybe fix a typo?
If it isn't a typo, you could throw a black sheet over this wall unit and load the shelves with encyclopedias. That wouldn't be fun :)
Just kidding
That would look beautiful chalk painted in white. I suggest Anne Sloan Old White or Rustoleum Chalked paint in Linen. It would look very nice against your wall color. Hopefully that is a suggestion you are looking for. A bit confused about your question: "how to make it NOT fun"
Why would want to make it "not fun"?
Paint.
Once you get to Florida, try stenciling it.
I think you mean to say you want to make this more fun, right? You should paint it. The shelf is adorable and with a fresh coat of paint, it could look really cool. It's shiny, so I would use a deglosser (you can get it from hardware stores), and then paint it a cool pink, green or fun, bright color that really pops.
Sand down the finish and paint with chalk paint
