Look up Limed Wood!
Use Citristrip to remove any thick finish. Use a combination of lacquer thinner, acetone, and steel wool to scrub. Minimize the amount of sand. Examine your wood furnishings. Use mineral spirits to clean up. Put on your fresh coat.
Carved wood is beautiful and it would be terrible to destroy it's natural beauty with paint. You can use Citristrip-a non-toxic paint remover, lightly sand and re-stain, coat with polyurethane for protection.
Try using a Limed wax on a hidden part to see if you like the look. They also do other colours too. Sorry I don't have any pictures for you, but you can research the internet or maybe eBay?
