I think if you cleaned it well then sanded it down to rough it up a black paint should hold. Have fun.
Black barbecue paint sticks better than home craft stuff, but only if it's sanded/scuffed
We actually did this. We removed the fireplace front. You can buy high heat spray paint. We lightly sanded the brass. Taped and covered the glass and sprayed the high heat spray paint. I will say that I can see black paint on my fingers when it is is handled but it looks so much better.
As Tiffany stated, use a high heat paint. You'll get the best finish by doing as she did and spraying it.
