I found these gems at a yard sale, he gave me the 2 of them for $4, I thought this was a steal! One is bifold and one is trifold, the trifold came with some less than attractive fabric curtains. He informed me they had been in a house fire he helped clean up after, but he never got inspired by them! His loss is my gain! I immediately knew how I would use these! In my wedding, of course! There are so many ways I want to use these I still haven’t fully decided where they will make an appearance!
Here is where we started, dingy, smoke stained and just gross! Minor repairs were also needed to some parts of the paneling, so that piece will be tackled when the weather is a little nicer!
Here they are opened up, this tutorial I’ll be focusing on the bifold panel since I do have a definite plan for this one! It will be a chalk board for likely the itinerary or the menu, or maybe the seating chart, any of these options would be perfect for a chalk board, then minor changes can be made last minute if need be!
I collaborated with Hometalk and Ecospaints, and ecospaints sent me this gallon of paint to try! I asked for the truest white they had and they nailed it! It’s called sugar dust and it was perfect for these doors! After sanding these down using my orbital palm sander, I used 2 light coats of this paint and got perfect streak free coverage, and the greatest part? No odor! Zero! Zip! Nada! This is just one of many applications I have in store for this paint! I can’t wait to show you what else I do with this beautiful white!
This just shows you how great the coverage really is! Even after sanding that smoke had just stained these so badly! The right had just ONE coat coverage! I’m floored!
After I got 2 coats front and back I headed back to the hardware store. I know Home Depot carries chalkboard panels already ready to go! They measure 2x4 ft which would be perfect! The openings in these doors are 1 foot and a little less that 4 feet tall! I got there and was slightly disappointed, most of the panels they had were damaged, but then it hit me! Home Depot will frequently discount damaged lumber up to 70%, so I grabbed 2 panels, headed back to the saw and asked the attendant if he could discount the panels I had chosen since I was going to be cutting them anyways and he quickly said he could do 50% and he would be happy to cut them for me! Win win! It never hurts to ask, and any time I don’t have to use my table saw, is a win in my book! That thing still scares me!
Since I had some board to play with I had them cut it at 15 inches wide, I gave myself some room on either side, and tried to make it some what symmetrical since folks will likely walk behind these at some point, predrilled my holes and attached the chalkboard with some simple screws!
That’s literally it! A yard sale adventure for the door, some elbow grease, paint, and discounted chalkboard, and they are complete! I’m so pleased with the outcome! And I will be going back to Home Depot for some more chalk board now that I know they will discount it if it’s damaged, give me all those discounts! Haha! Who is with me? I hope you enjoyed this trash to treasure! Happy new year to you all! Be sure to follow me here as well as my Instagram @redsrusticworkshop See you all in 2020!!

I love a good bargain, and no worries about the plaid material, it was a pre used dollar store plastic table cloth, they’re pretty much single use, we used it for a function and it already had holes so was trash before I ruined it with paint :)
