Hi ! I use the battery operated candles ! Depending on the brand you can set them to stay on for up to 10 hours , they will automatically to on the same time each evening and then off at the designated setting . I keep them in my bathrooms and living room , they have a nice soft light . Especially in the bathroom , just enough light to see , not harsh !
Hello. The Hometalk DIY link listed below might be helpful. Its an intriguing way to add lighting that brightness could be easily managed by the construction material.
Hope this helps.

Additionally we have a log cabin - all this wood makes a room very dark we use fairy lights and flickering battery operated candles ( in and out of lanterns) to offer some low light ambience around the fireplace and windows. Often these sort of accessories have automatic timers.

What about a wall sconce? They sell plug in sconces.
Plug in night lights a cheap and don't use a lot of power. Get ones that turn on when it is dark in the area. We have a few scattered around the house.
Rope lights.
What about some fairy twinkle lights?
I just put some strip lights on my staircase. These work great as the kit comes with a remote and many colors. Do you think this would work as a wall unit?
They make puck lights that are battery operated.
Several great suggestions. But, may I add, the new outlets that provide lighting at night or when it gets darker, are inexpensive, easy to install, and the power is already there. This is what we have:

Hi Bill, you can easily build a light box to hang on the wall with this link, just darken the front a bit to the desired dim you prefer, you could even put it on a timer plug, hope it helps you out!
