The retro-look of metal cabinets is very popular right now. The one thing you could do is give them a good cleaning and repaint them.
Hello
My first suggestion would always be paint. Additionally could you possibly post a photograph to better see your cabinet situation and area of concern?

Metal cabinets can be painted for a fresh look or you could use peel and stick wallpaper to give it an entire new look.
I have used Rustoleum spray paint successfully on metal cabinets. Metal lockers and file cabinets to be specific. I am not sure if you are talking about kitchen cabinets or freestanding cabinets. You can prime first with a spray primer and then paint. The paint will need good drying time so it doesn't scratch off. Here's some helpful info for you!

Paint would be my go to. If there is no rust, scuff with fine steel wool then wipe with denatured alcohol. Ready to prime and paint. RustOleum is my recommendation.

Hi Patricia, here's a couple of links to updates that may inspire you. You can always customize by using the colors of your choice. You can also use contact paper, wall paper or use masking tape to create various designs and use spray paints to spruce up the cabinets. Also stencils could be used in various areas to really make the metal cabinet "pop". Have fun with it!
