It would depend on what kind of smells Victoria! I would suggest using a carpet cleaner with an appropriate cleaning product. I use my carpet cleaner and a cleaning product to remove pet odors. You could also have your carpet professionally cleaned but that may be be an option right now.
I've had good luck with sprinkling carpet with baking soda, letting it sit a couple of hours and then vacuuming it up! After that you can rent a carpet cleaner to give it a deep clean.
I mix several drops of essential oil in baking soda. Sprinkle it liberally on the carpet and let it sit for an hour or two. Then vacuum it up. I also make a room, fabric, carpet spray with a mixture of ten drops of different essential oils cheap vodka in a spray bottle. Spray the room, furniture, and carpeting with it. The vodka evaporates and the scent remains.
Thank you, I plan on using baking soda that is my preference, something organic without the smells of something commercially made. and I really like the idea of essential oils ! Thank you !
Victoria: If the smells are that bad, I suggest getting your carpet professionally cleaned --- or even renting a unit and doing it yourself (it's pretty easy.)
I have had this area rug professionally cleaned. We do not have pets so the smell was not that. Not sure what the smell was, but i did not like it. Thank you for your suggestion .
Steam clean your carpet or use Shake & Vac. If you have neither, Vac carpet then use 1001 or a bowl of hot water and disinfectant (Floral if you have it) and a drop of washing Up liquid and a sponge. Mix and squeeze sponge to make suds. Use the sponge with the suds on the carpet. Start at the far side of the room and work backwards to the door. Leave until dry before Using the Vac on it again.
You could rent a Rug Doctor system from a local diy store, they have them at supermarkets too. These come with recommended cleaning supplies for this system. I would do thin in lieu of buying a cleaner for the carpet.
This question makes me think of old Love My Carpet commercials from the early to mid-1980s. With 2 kids & 2 dogs, my mom would stock up whenever she could stack coupons & sales.
The directions for this product, which was mostly baking soda (aka bicarb), were to shake it on & vacuum after waiting 5-10 min. My mother's trick was always to vacuum first too. The powder could settle deeper into the carpet if the pile was already up.
I have mostly hardwood & tile in my current home, but the rule holds for area or throw rugs too. Vacuum, sprinkle with sented baking soda, wait, & vacuum again.
If you still have troubles, try Frebreez or its generic equivalent. I get mine from Dollar Tree for a buck.
I have used carpet shampooer or steamer services in the past, but there is a disappointing secret cost with wall-to-wall carpet. Getting the pad under the carpet wet causes it to break down faster. This can lead to uneven wear in your carpet, or even new recurrent odors. The net result is often that you get your carpet "cleaned" more and more often. With minimal padding, the difference is negligible; but it can have a surprising impact on "better" padding.
On a related note, if the cause is a pet relieving itself indoors, try collecting solids promptly. Pooling liquids get blotted with fabric towels. Deal with soaked in liquids with either salt or baking soda. I would then break out a wet/dry vacuum once mostly dry.
What kind of smell? Musty due to a flood? Or pet smell like cat? Big difference in smells but the fix is pretty much the same. In either case, rug doctor or Bissell the entire rug!! Then use a dehumidifier. The pet smell will be helped by the dehumidifier as well as any musty smell. If it gets too bad, I would replace the carpet.

Deep clean with white cleaning vinegar. The vinegar smell will quickly disapate.
