Hi Carolyn, a regular curtain rod would work ok, I know they make them extra sturdy for really big and heavy curtains. The rod isn't as important as what its hanging on.
Hi Carolyn, if the drapes are really heavy, you may need to reinforce the spot the rod is hanging. Add a thick board to the wall, right where you are going to attach the curtain rod.
Or, be sure that the spot where you screw the rod in to the wall has a stud running up the wall there. You can use a stud finder to be sure.

I have 2 pairs of large curtains and found a wood curtain wood to work for me. Being wood this allowed me to be able to add an additional piece of doweling to the rod for the length I need.
I just painted the doweling the same color as the rest of the rod after sanding it to make a seamless connection.
Because of the extra weight I added a piece in the center for more support.
You can use a cardboard template to make sure all your curtains and rods are even. Here is a website that has a great tutorial

It's not so much the length as it is the weight. Use the correct rod and screws for the weight. If heavy use Molly bolts or put into studs.
Extra Large, or Extra Long?
What are the dimensions of the curtains you want to hang, and what type are they - for example, grommet, rod pocket, hooks, etc.?
As far as buying the right size of an expandable curtain rod, always purchase one that expands wider than the maximum width of your curtain panels.
For example, if the width of your curtain panels is 75inches, and the rod choices are 60-80 inches, or 65-90inches, purchase the second one. This way the rod will not be stretched out so much, and therefore will be thicker/stronger. Being stronger will help prevent the rod from sagging in the middle, and pulling away from the wall.
If they're extra wide, you'll need plenty of support brackets in between the ends. If they're extra long you can hang the rod higher above the windows, it will make them appear taller.
If your draperies are exceedingly long, you can "puddle" them on the floor, or, using heavy tie backs, drape them so that the extra length is suspended, to keep them off the floor. If your windows are particularly short as compared to the drpary length, you'll need to shorten and hem the draperies. If they are washable, do that prior to hemming. Typically, draperies should be at least twice as wide as your window, plus any "returns".
These brackets worked well for me. Just make sure to secure them to a wall stud. https://amzn.to/3bR3Vcn
