Hi Brooke, I can envison lots and lots of container pots with either veggies or colorful flowers, also a few hainging ones. Here's a link to some more "serious" ideas. You could divide the length up a bit and have one area for gardening and anohter for a couple of chairs in which to "hill".

I can see veggies growing in pots. You could grow salad makings in pots and even garlic and carrots could go into deep containers. Plus there would still be a small sitting area possible.
Someone just posted a ladder and planter herb garden project today. I would probably set out a couple of chairs and small table so you can enjoy the space with you beverage and snack of choice.
Hi Brooke, you could make that balcony really cute. You could put a small outdoor couch with cushions against that back wall so you can sit outside. Use some cute outdoor pillows. Add an outdoor rug that fits. You can add a little bistro set with some cushions that match. Get yourself a pretty ceramic potted plant like a tall palm. If you are crafty/handy and like projects....I just think this is the coolest for your situation:

Rene's Garden seeds have some compact "Container" seeds for growing veggies in pots -Perfect for apartment dwellers. http://www.reneesgarden.com/hm-gardnr/resource/con...
You can also grow a root crop in the same container as an "above -the-ground" plant. Potatoes would be a nice thing to try with beans for instance which might need a pole for a trellis.

Also, if smaller varieties are grown, try The three sisters, like Native Americans did .

Try Earth Boxes, we love ours (Link Below) The box is about 2 1/2 feet long, 12" wide and about 12" deep. Three 3" from the bottom is a plastic layer which is remove-able. A watering tube at one end for auto or manual watering. Reuse-able, will fit onto rollers to roll out of the way.
You can grown veggies and flowers in planters on the railing. Maybe a bistro set and a comfy chair and ottoman?
A bistro set and planter boxes on the railing would be beautiful.
What a gorgeous space - you must be so pleased. How about something like this, I think it looks really elegant

You definitely need some color. Perhaps an indoor/outdoor rug. Ad some seating. You could do balcony rail planters. I've seen some good deals on Amazon. If you want privacy, affix some type of covering to the rail like vines or material.
A small patio set with a beautiful colorful rug!
Try a taller patio tree with some color, vividly colored patio containers with herbs and flowers in different heights. Note that marigolds, lavender, scented geraniums, lemon thyme , lemon basil, lemon verbena will all keep flies and mosquitoes away while you enjoy evenings on your patio.
This idea shown here is really cute.
I would add an outdoor rug, fun outdoor lighting like large bulb lights and/or candles and of course some comfy furniture. Here are some outdoor planter ideas:

Isabelle LaRue is just about the cleverest designer for small spaces that I have found on YouTube. Not just patios... She has a number of "renter" ideas on how to spiffy up your apartment and yet leave it favorable for your landlord. She has also contributed some of her work here on Hometalk, This patio concept is one of her finest. Check her out. Search for "Engineer Your Space" for other ideas.
