Kill an established Trumpet Vine?
Trumpet vine is established in the middle of our flowerbed. It is under the lawncloth and mulch, intertwining with the other plans and spreading in all directions. For four years, I have partially dug every start, pulled up spreading roots and cut back, cut back, cut back. Unsuccessfully. Is there a way to kill a specific invasive plant without harming the surrounding plantings?

You can apply vinegar to the roots with an eye dropper. Make sure it goes just on the vine. It may not kill it but it should wither it enough. Over time it would possibly prevent it from coming back.
The best way is to dig up the root as this is how they spread. This link should help: https://www.organiclesson.com/get-rid-of-trumpet-vines/

Hi Laurie, give this week killer a try. Just be sure to only put it on the trumpet vine

Just keep digging! It sucks we have them too.
You could try putting salt pellets around the base and when it withers, keep cutting back. Eventually you'll have to dig it out to fully get rid of it.
I would continue to dig and eveatually it will be gone ...adding a chemicals may harm other flowers to be destroyed
Use a small paint brush and keep painting the leaves with Round up.
I use this method to kill Bindweed. So it should work on a Trumpet Vine. The weed killer is confined so no other plants will be harmed if you don't spill it.
I add an inch or so of Roundup/weed killer to a plastic pop bottle. You should be able to lay the bottle on its side without spillage. Lay the open bottle on its side next to the vine in question. Carefully stuff some of said vine inside without damaging it. The vine will absorb weed killer down to its roots. Refill bottle till all of said vine is dead.
Hello. Aggressive vines are difficult to eradicate. I would suggest trying to take up as much as you can by digging out the existing plant and then spot treating whatever emerges with an appropriate herbicide.
We have the same problem with our neighbors grapevines trailing off onto our property and entangling in our evergreen trees. It is a bear to control and contain.
Hi Laurie, hope this helps you out, Cut the plant off at the ground and paint the fresh cut stump with full strength weed killer. ... If you see any shoots regrowing, respray them immediately with herbicide. On the organic side, you can use boiling water as an herbicide to kill trumpet vines.
Cut it but then immediately follow up by carefully spraying the fresh cuts with RoundUp. it will seep into the roots and kill it.
This is just the thing! I find this works wonderfully. You have to cut the vine and then brush this on the top of where you cut it. Bonide It will travel down to the roots and kill the plant.
