Hi Deb, how about a tote bag or Christmas tree heart .
If you celebrate Christmas perhaps a Christmas item might be recommended you could make a tree shaped a stocking or a star. Family members might appreciate that.

You could make a Boy Rag doll - A quilt - A framed collage picture using the shirt as background - You could make a make-up bag or Nightdress case etc.........
How about a sachet for the drawers filled with pleasant herbs, a picture frame wrapped with the fabric and his picture in it, there is always scrap-booking or use a wreath form and cut strips 6" x 1" ( or your preferred measurements) tie them on the wreath. pin cushion, cloth clothes pin bag.
A little can go a long way.
I have seen people sew them into quilts.
So sorry for you loss. What about using the fabric for the background of a shadow box with other photos or memory items in there?
A shadow box or use as a center piece on a quilt.
