See how we built a custom wall rack for our cast iron cookware in our new farmhouse kitchen.

The whole process of building a custom cast iron wall rack

Watch how exactly we built it. It helps to have some DIY experience and basic (power) tools.

Locating the studs

Since we renovated our kitchen ourselves, my husband had marked the location of the studs. This step is important because we want to fasten to boards to the studs since the cast iron cookware is very heavy.

Marking the location for the center lag screw

This will be the only screw attaching the boards to the stud.

This is the top board attached in place

Playing with the layout

We laid everything out on the kitchen floor to see how it would work on the wall with the skillets and dutch ovens we have. This is the moment to make some adjustment or tweaks.

All three boards in place

All three boards are screwed in place. We attached two more screws on the left and right side of every board (simple drywall anchors). The big black screw in the middle is what attaches the boards to the stud.

Detail of bottom board

This one holds 4 skillets with nice cast iron hooks.

where did you find those cast iron hooks and how do they attach?

Yeah, but don't the pans scratch/ding the heck out of the walls? I had a wall mounted rod & ended up getting rid of it because the wall looked awful (and had to be repainted).

I have done something like this in my last two houses. The difference being, that I ordered extra wood worktop when I was refitting, and attached it to the wall from the counter to the ceiling, and I hang my pans and large knives etc on it. If I need something else hung up, I just add another hook. Also under a double wall unit, I attached another peice of the worktop and I hang my cups on it. Keeps a lot of space free. Well done with this, as it can be adapted to be suitable for different wall space and needs.
