You can buy premade ship lap that is primed. Each piece overlaps so you don't see any ceiling. You would have to locate your ceiling joists so that you can run the boards perpendicular. I have done several ceilings this way. It is quite simple to do.
Hope this helps you:

How to Install a Planked Wood Ceiling

You will need to identify where are the ceiling joists are located. Then you can screw or nail the wooden planks into the joists.
I think it’s going to depend on what you use, whether it’s strips you cut, pallet pieces, wood boards, or premade products. Try the search bar at the top left and seek out projects there, you’ll get a better understanding.
Hello Sharon,
Use Tongue and Groove, Use grip adhesive or if just planks of wood , find out where the joists are and use them to fix too, countersink screws and back fill or you could use screw covers, or domed nails maybe...........
Here’s how we did it: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2019/03/how-to-install-tongue-and-groove-ceiling-planks.html?m=1
Hello. When we were doing the bathroom while we had the choice of doing the single planks or sheet panel system. My suggestion is if you do the sheets you may wish to consider pre-painted before hanging up.
