Want to replace glass inserts in two end tables. Can’t be anything breakable but thin enough not to be higher than the outside frame of the top. Suggestions?

Try shatter resistant polycarbonate panels. They are available in a variety of thicknesses.
You might use a piece of Masonite, finished/painted to match your decor. You could also try a piece of wood paneling that matches or blends with the wood finish of your tables. Or maybe a piece of painted beadboard paneling, or white board. Plexiglass or acrylic would also work, but might not be as appealing in looks. Good luck!
Hello. You might want to look at a plexiglass table insert, they are at the hardware store in the glass department. They will be far more expensive than regular window glass.
I have used tiles. Husband built the needed support under the table opening to support the tiles. when there was a slight lip at the transition I used a heavy decorative cording.
Check with your local window and glass dealer. They will custom cut and supply you with tempered glass.
Plexiglass comes in different widths, but can scratch. I would price tempered glass. Amazon sells tempered glass panels.
Amazon sells glass in certain sizes. Otherwise, I would contact Lowes or a place that specializes in cutting glass to specific sizes.
You could replace the glass with a thin piece of wood, paint and stencil it. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/end-table-makeover-with-ascp-and-stencils-2371264

We have a glass specialty shop in our town. If you have one, you can take the exact measurements to them and they can make them for you to fit. We did that when we moved with Mother's kitchen hutch and the glass went in perfectly!
Hello Cheri,
You could go for Plexiglass, or plywood or MDF or Hardboard. All would do the job.
Hello Cheri,
Maybe Plywood or MDF or Veneered Board. Measure the Glass and then look for replacement in that size.
There are lots of projects here where people replaced glass in their tables.

Hello,
MDF comes in many thicknesses and can be finished with stain or painted. Something Laminated, Covered in Contact . Just measure the thickness of the glass to determine the thickness of the inserts.
Hi Cherie, tempered glass can be custom cut for this. Any place i your area that does glass repairs can do it for you, you could even think about tinted glass or mirrored, hope this helps
