Dahlias bloom best when they are planted in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Border dahlias can be planted 15” apart from center to center; standard types are usually spaced about 18” from center to center.
Hello most sources recommend well drained soil. Too much voice your may cause root rot. Such a lovely flower deserves a proper location to preform at peak.
Go for a non-wet area. You need to dig them up for the winter or they will rot.

Dahlias bloom best when they are planted in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Need dug up and separated, stored in cool dry place every fall if you have ground freeze(depending what part of country you live in) and replanted every year after Mother's Day last frost/ground freeze.
they should be fine.
Hi AnnMarie, I don't think a moist area will work that well, as dahlias grow and flower best in a well-drained, sunny site. They like warm weather and will not tolerate frost. Plant dahlia tubers outdoors after your last frost date, when the soil has warmed.
