Hi Esther you can definitely tile around the toilet. I would tape the toilet off with painters tape first though so if you get mortar or grout on the toilet it will be easy to remove.
you can cut tiles to fit around toilet - I would not raise the toilet and tile under it because then if you have leaks or other problems you will have to remove the tile for repairs
here is more info for you

Yes you can, Make sure you use caulk around the base of the toilet after it is installed.
Hi Esther. You can do either but the problem with tiling around the toilet and not under is that if they aren't cut with enough room to remove the toilet you will damage them if you ever have to replace the toilet or need repairs done to it. By tiling under it you can easily remove the toilet for replacement or repairs.
Hi Esther,
If you want to cut the tile to go around the toilet it will help a lot to get a Contour Gauge. One of these can help make a template for almost any shape plus make it accurate and easy to measure. They run between roughly $8 and $22 but they are reusable and can be used for other types of projects.
Having said that, Recreated Designs is right, Professionals will install the floor first, then the toilet. Here's an article that explains why. I hope this helps. Wishing you the best.

Tiles go down before toilet goes in. You can try to cut tiles around the toilet but it won't be easy and it would look bad. Also any future repairs to the toilet will damage the tile job.
Hi Esther, yes you can cut the tile to fit around the toilet, but be sure you make a pattern and cut the tile the way the product recomments . Good luck
Hi Esther. Try using newspaper to create a pattern. Make a cut out of the curves of the toilet. When you're happy with the newspaper pattern, place it over the tile and cut the shapes out. Then put the tile in place. Good luck Esther. Hope all is well with you.
I have yet to see a neat, level, or tight fitting job where someone has tried to cut individual tiles to go around toilet base curves.
Agree with William- tiles go down before toilet goes in.
You can fit them around the toilet but it's difficult to make the cuts correctly. I would take it out, tile, add an extender, and put back in place.
I don't think I would attempt it without removing & reseating the toilet. Think of the potential for leaks if the seal isn't perfect?
Definitely tile under the toilet!
They sell a riser that fits on the toilet flange to achieve the added height of the tile.
Remember to use a new wax ring
We tile around the toilet. Be sure to cailk, too. Good luck and stay safe!
you need cement board , tinset and of course tiles
