Hi Janet. Make a paste with salt and lemon juice. Put it on the rust and let it set for a half hour. Then wipe it all off. If the rust is very deep, you may need to repeat. Once the rust is gone, bury the axe in a bucket of sand and it will never rust again. Good luck Janet. Hope all is well with you.

Step 1: Soaking in White Vinegar White vinegar has Acetic acid which remove rust completly : put the axe in a plastic box that has an enough height to submerge the head with acid. pour white vinegar slowly, and make sure to cover the WHOLE axe, place the box in a safe place, soak it for a day and a half.
Soak it in vinegar. Depending on how much rust there is, it may take a couple of days.
WD40 and a green kitchen scrubby. Vinegar soak overnight. To prevent rusting spray WD40 on it after every use.
Soak in vinegar or coke over night then spray with WD40.

I use a can of Coke to remove rust. It works well, and is easy to get. If it needs more, I have also used WD40 effectively. Good luck and stay safe!

I used CLR and some steel wool to clean a tool recently, tool is like new again.
