You don’t give the dimensions of the basket. If it is 6x12 inches you would need about 54 feet of 1/4 inch robe.
The basket in the picture is made from sisal rope, and most likely has been glued on, as it is difficult to sew. For projects requiring sewing it is better to use cotton cording, also called piping, depending on where you live.
The size of the box you are starting with, as well as the width of the rope you purchase will determine how much is needed. DO you have a box picked out for this project already that you can measure?
"The type of rope you work with does not matter, but since you will be handling it a lot, it might be a good idea to work with something soft so that your fingers don't feel sore by the end. Macramé or 100% rope would work best, however."
The amount of rope you need will dependent on both the size of container you want to wrap and the diameter of the rope. The fatter the rope, the less length you need. Rope is sold in pretty long lengths by the package (especially at Hardware Freight) or is fairly cheap if bought by the foot.
If you're doing a rectangular container, just figure the area and forget about about the thickness of the rope - just pick a basic common diameter such as 1/2" or 3/8" and add an extra foot or two to be sure you've got enough. To figure the area you will need the length and height of each side. From there, calculate the square inches. Multiply the height calculation by the diameter rope you've (example: You choose 1/2" rope so you must double your height numbers by in order to account for the fact that as you go, you're only covering .5" at a time so you must multiply that number by 2 in order to get the final amount to sq. inches. Hope that makes sense!)
Example Calculations for Basket 10" long by 12" tall by 8" wide using 1/2" rope
10" x 12" = 120 sq. inches
120 sq. inches x 2 sides = 140 sq. inches
8" x 12" = 96 sq. inches
96 sq. inches x 2 sides = 192 sq. inches
Also - calculate if you are roping the bottom and if you are making rope handles!
As calculate now w/ no handles or bottom you need a total of
140 + 192 = 332 sq. inches
332 x 2 (using 1/2" rope so need to calculate to bring to sq. inches) = 664 sq. inches.
664 divided by 12 will get you the number of feet need = 55.33 feet of rope
This sounds like an awful lot but rope is often sold in 75' or 100' lengths as is cotton clothesline.
The first option here tells you how to make a rope basket without having to use an inside container for the finished product:

Looks to be 5/16" or 3/8" rope
you would need to go back to the post you saw this on and ask the question there- we don't have access to those posts and projects
Are you trying to pick that rope on line ? I would go to hardware store and pick my own
I would buy a whole spool if it’s small buy two
The length of rope that comes on 'one spool' varies greatly from one brand to the next, the diameter of the rope, and price. Unfortunately, there is no consistency.
You could ask Hannah directly. There's a place for questions at the bottom of the post.
Hello,
I would recon on 20 x the measurement all around the box.
If this came from a specific post on Hometalk, you'll have to look it up that way. The amount of rope needed is going to depend on whatever size box you decide to make or use. A quick measure and some math will give you your answer.
