How to paint metal?
On my front porch the landlord has a metal glider swing that is over eighty yrs old and could use a new coat of paint. There is some surface rust. I wanted to know if it should be sanded and primed before painting it

Hi Connie. Sand the rust off to prevent more rust from forming. Be sure to clean all sanding dust off before you paint it. Then you can paint it. I would use a Rustoleum paint that has primer already in it. Good luck Connie.
Hi Connie! It's always best to sand the rust off of metal first first before painting. You can even use a wire brush. :)
You can use a wire brush to remove the rust. Then a light sanding overall to help the new paint stick. Clean the glider well before using a spray paint that is made for outdoors.
I swear some of the taggers around here have to be mental.
Hi! A good cleaning with a sander and/or a wire brush will remove the loose rust. Wear long sleeves, gloves and goggles to protect yourself from sharp pieces of metal and rust. Clean well before painting. I prefer Rustoleum paint. I have used their primer, which is great for inhibiting new rust, and then one of the colors they have. If you want additional protection, apply their clear sealer. Ask the landlord if he or she will pay for your painting supplies since you are providing the labor. Good luck and stay safe!
Yes. Clean, sand and paint.
I painted a mesh type metal furniture a few years ago and I used to spray paint. I prepped and cleaned the set carefully— sanded it away any loose finish or rust and then used a Rustoleum spray paint —it has always been my favorite choice for professional results. The rustoleum spray paint often has primer and paint combined in one. The universal series has an excellent designed applicator- easy to use top spray nozzle that can operate in any angle.
The before and after was a remarkable accomplishment. I like the oil rubbed bronze finish much better than the white finish. Best wishes with your patio glider rehab!

yes, remove the rust first then prime and paint.
Use a wire brush and then sand paper to take the rust off, then wash with soapy water and let dry, this will remove the rust particles that are loose. You can spray paint in light layers to avoid runs in the paint. Rustoleum makes great products for this.

Sand it then use spray paint formulated for the outdoors
Start with steel wool and scuff all over. Where there is rust, use a stiff brush to remove rust. Then use Loctite Rust Neutralizer (link below), then you are ready to prime and paint.

Hi Connie,
Yes and no! Depends on whether you want to use Rust Oleum that can be applied on top of rust or you want to do a proper job!
Ask your landlord if you could spray paint the swing.
