How to Build the Cutest Garden Gate From Scrap Wood in an Hour!
Anyone else have ivy grow all over their house?
I have a small garden shed attached to a fence, and this was the summer I decided to finally deal with it! But after tearing off the vines, I was left with quite a mess to clean up!
However, a simple clean up was not enough. This area was truly unattractive... how could I spruce it up?
And that's when I thought... a gate!
I've always wanted a garden gate to open up this this area of the yard so I could access garden tools without running around the entire house to get them.
Gathering up scrap pieces of reclaimed wood, the cutest little gate in the land emerged one short hour later... garden-themed no less!
The area will be getting more work, but I'd say this outcome was quite an effective pitstop, don't you think?!
Here's how utterly charming this area turned out...
After ivy vines were pulled off the shed, this mess was left. It was time for a BIG clean up and revamp to make this area pretty!
This fence panel was my target. I desired to turn it into a gate instead for easier access to the shed.
So here's what I did...
A simple frame was built from scrap wood fence planks, with the thoughts that after hanging it, I'd attach longer planks as if it was part of the fence. A hidden gate if you will.
Learn more about the jig I used to help build this simple gate in the original blog post link below this post. Helpful video included!
But what happened next even surprised me...
After gathering up a few garden-themed and crate styled stencils, I bypassed hiding the gate and turned it into a feature as-is instead!
Find all stencils I used for this project in the original blog post linked below or from Funky Junk's Old Sign Stencils HERE
How simple and positively cute is this?!
Random scrap wood pieces teamed up with garden stencils, designed to resemble cut up garden crates were the perfect addition to this charming gate!
From blocked-off do-no-enter to a wonderfully whimsical glimpse into the garden beyond, the gate positively begs you to walk right in!
What a difference a quick clean up made! And while it's not quite done, you have to admit, that simple yet charming gate made this area positively SING.
But the other side is equally cute and different! Wanna see it too?

I love it. But, from past experience, I know someone in my neighborhood would complain to the town's zoning board and I'd get fined for it not being up to code. Just a head's up for anyone considering it- there's always that one neighbor...(or an HOA- even worse!)

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I don't understand what this gate, with the centre exposed, and the bottom so high, is supposed to keep out.
Does it have a practical function, or is it decorative only?
