It depends on the layout and the amount of storage you have. The most important thing is to have a place for everything and avoid clutter on your countertops. If storage is limited, think about your walls and ceiling. Pots can be stored from a rack hung from the ceiling, and the walls could hold shelves or a pegboard. If you have a picture, I could tell you more, Cindy.
No way to know what you kitchen looks like, counter space or cabinet space. Search ideas at the top of this page where the magnifying glass is on the top left. You can add all sorts of storage on the inside of cabinet doors, space in between appliance and wall, hanging much used items on a pegboard, under cabinet counters and even pots and pans from a rack suspended from the ceiling. Add removable shelving in front of the window (so you can clean and open it).
A picture would have been very helpful to see what you are starting with, here are some suggestions in a link that might help you.

I think the most important thing in a small kitchen is to declutter. Get as much as possible off counters. My MIL has a small kitchen that always looked bad to me. When she went into rehab, I went through her cabinets and purged expired items as well as cookware that was rusted, missing lids, etc. Got everything into cabinets except a crock of hand utensils (spatulas and such). It was a major improvement. Then I put some bright contact paper on the backsplash, which was wooden paneling, and it brightened it up. Cleaned cabinets and drawer pulls. It looked like a new kitchen.
Try posting a picture so we can give you some detailed advice!
Cindy: Declutter, declutter, declutter! Look at kitchens on TV Reno show reveals... there is little on those counter-tops and the kitchen look HUGE!
Pictures will help so much - or a floor plan. Can you post?
clean out any items you do not use, buy clear containers (dollar stores have them as well) and use to store plastic tops to containers, etc. stack pots and pans and if you have a spot in our laundry room or garage, add a shelf or two and store seldom used items there.

With a small room, going vertical helps. I have a small kitchen since downsizing, and I added a shelf next to the stove, with S hooks for hanging my kitchen cooking utensils. It works great. I also added a small shelf on the back of the stove to keep my salt and pepper for cooking. If the side of your refrigerator is exposed, magnets can hold anything from a calendar to coupons. I set up a shelf by the back door for the garbage bags, with S hooks holding a brush and dustpan. Below it is my recycling and garbage. I use the top of the cupboards for platters and other items that aren't used that often. I have a kitchen cart I made from a children's desk, on wheels, that I keep my baking supplies in and small appliances. Good luck and stay safe!
Our first kitchen was teeny- ridiculously small! We painted everything white and added white countertops and appliances. We had very few things on the countertop and a very simple valance on the one window in the room. The less stuff you keep around the more room you'll have for cooking and preparing food and we gave up one of the 3 bottom cabinets and replaced it with an apartment sized dishwasher because nothing makes a kitchen area look more cluttered and have less functional space than a lot of dirty dishes.

Hi Cindy, light colors make an area look larger. You will want to keep your counters clear, so it doesn't look cluttered. Usually there is only one way you can arrange your kitchen with the appliances being in their places. Are you doing a remodel? Hope I helped you and did not confuse you. Good luck
Hi Cindy - We have a large kitchen but an awkward layout that does not allow for a lot of storage. Here are some great ideas you can use too. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

Yes, photos would be most helpful. If you need more storage space, think about going vertically.
Could you add floating shelves so that you have extra space for storing things
Anything you do not use on a daily basis, bag it up and remove from the kitchen, this means extra wooden spoons, coffee cups, extra dishes, carryout containers, in a week or so if you have not needed it, donate it, or put it in someplace as a pantry. Keep shelves free of clutter.
