The backing is as important as the pile.
Most pre-made ones are 100% polypropylene or polyolefin or olefin.
It’s a cheap fiber and it can take being rained on and left in the sun.
Nylon is a superior fiber, but is typically more $.
You might be able to find a carpet remnant at a flooring store or even a big box DIY store.
We don’t want an attached foam pad as it will hold water like a sponge.
You can buy seam tape or use a bead of construction adhesive on the back to slow down the raveling of the edges.
I would not use a canvas tarp, unless it’s going to be in an area that doesn’t get wet and has little traffic.
You could paint one on the floor!

I bought one so I would know it could survive heat and being hosed down. Mine was $39 for 5x8. Right now is a great time to buy one. Most are 50% off. There are some things that, to me, make more sense to buy.
