Hi Hal, here's a step by step tutorial. I've built a couple of staircases now and though they're not at all hard to build its VERY important you take the time before hand to make sure all of your calculations are correct. https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-build-stairs-deck/
Here's some nice ones, some above just plain functional ones:

The very most important part is to know the distance from the deck to the surace where the stairs will end. Here's a few videos that may be helpful to you in doing your project.

I would highly recommend buying stringers that are pre-cut. It's not an easy item to DIY and the cost isn't that much higher than buying the boards and cutting them yourself. Attach with metal "hurricane" ties. If they are wide, you will need 3 stringers. I would also recommend buying the grooved steps if there is a slip danger.

Hi! First check with your code enforcement person to find out specific requirements. Once they tell you what you need, to be legal, you may need to draw up plans that are very specific for your permit. How high is your deck? That will be one of the questions. A handrail is required depending on how many steps and how high the deck is. Once you know what is required, it is much easier to price precut stringers and sections of railing. Good luck and stay safe!
I agree with Cynthia, I would check with your town for code first. They can usually give you plan to start with which will help get you going and you can be assured you'll be up to code.

You definitely need to check with your local building department first and also make sure you have any required permits. Un-permitted construction at the time of a house sale is a nightmare. Next you need to research the standard sizes and requirements and follow those (there are standards for risers and treads as well as handrail heights). Lastly you can then design it and build.
