Start w/painting the background color. First, sand it lightly all over w/300 grit sandpaper, so it has a surface that can grab paint. Prime it first with white primer. Then brush on 2 coats of a natural, earthy color, use eggshell finish latex indoor wall paint. Then, find or buy a big feather, turkey feather is good. Get smaller amounts of 2 or 3 coordinating colors, for painting the veins/stripes of the marble. Use the side of the turkey feather as a delicate paint brush, making long, thin, uneven brush strokes, varying slightly in thickness, in roughly the same direction. Then using the other colors, slightly shorter brush strokes can be applied, and uneven dots & blotches, as well. It helps a lot to work from a picture/copy of a marble or granite that you like. When you're happy with it, let it dry, then add 2 coats of clear, water-based sealer. I hope it goes smoothly for you!

Hello Debra,
If you want to get the Marble or Granite look, follow the instructions Lolo Star and Michelle Leslie, but if you want to paint over Marble or Granite finish you already have on a table, then you will need to use a coat of something called ESP (Easy Surface Preparation) available from good DIY stores, and then paint on top of it.....
