The rug has been spot cleaned after pet accidents, usually around the edges. Now I need to know how to make those areas soft and pliable again!
Check out this product if you don't get a good diy solution. I bought this for my parents' home. They had some horrible stains and it removed without scrubbing. Just spray then vacuumed.

Do you know what the stains are?
Is it wool or cotton? I would make sure the cleaning product is safe for natural fibers.
I don’t think spot cleaning will be satisfactory.
I’ve had an antique Persian rug professionally cleaned and what they did was use only cold water to rinse something like Woolite out of it. And they did it on a big concrete patio in their courtyard. They squeegeed them dry.
I would wash a section of the driveway or patio that drains well and work there.
If you’ve a concrete block fence that’s a good place to work as well for draining dry.
We have had our antique rugs professionally cleaned and they do it with a huge Turkish submersion bath. It is the correct method for rugs that use handmade dyes. Not sure if that is what you want to do or the type of rug that would need this but it worked great. It is expensive. I also removed the tassels and had it bound....I just felt the tassels made it look dirtier and also is hard to maintain. Good luck.
If your rug is silk, have it cleaned only by a trusted professional.
How to Clean Your Vintage Rug

I would definitely entrust this to a pro rug cleaner to avoid accidentally damaging it.
if it truly vintage you need to take it somewhere to determine exactly what natural fibers are in it (silk? wool?)and have it professionally cleaned then use woolite and cool water to spot clean it yourself as needed never "Rub" when cleaning carpet always "Blot" if you do not know what this means google the tight way to clean rugs
If it is vintage, you really need professional care. If you get it too wet with a carpet machine you will ruin it.
Hi Helen,
A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company if the rug is valuable! or you could steam clean it. Best wishes
For a vintage rug, I would use a professional who can treat it properly and carefully.
I would have Stanley steamer come and clean them because if they can’t it will be free. And you doing it might shrink the rug and it will not lay flat
