How do I paint scored brick??
We bought our home 3 years ago. It was built in 1968 as an old chicken farmhouse. The fireplace is huge, it was their only source of heat when they were farming here. But it's ugly scored brick. I want to paint it, is this possible? Please also let me know how to clean fireplace brick to prep for a paint job. Thanks

I don't think it matters if it's scored. Paint will definitely update it. Be sure to give it a good cleaning before you start. Here's a link with steps to take:

Consider doing a white wash. You will need to clean it thoroughly and you use thinned white latex paint. I think that would look great. You could leave the hearth dark and also go dark with the mantle.
There is a product called Brick Anew. It is a kit and comes in many different colors and color blends. Go check it out https://brick-anew.com/
Hi Emilie,
I agree with the idea of white washing. We had some old z-brick (black & white) on our fireplace wall. I don't like the look of painted brick so I white-washed the entire wall and love how it turned out. Here's the link to my process. Wishing you the best.

How to White Wash With Paint
Hi there,
You could use a Sponge cut down or a small sponge roller. If all else fails paint everything white and then pick out the pointing should you wish to.

You brush the paint in the direction of the score lines. They will fill in. If you don't want a solid flat color, don't put the paint on so thick use two thin layers.

I would use a highly textured brush. A wallpaper glue or smoothing brush may work.
You could also buy a 5 gal bucket of joint compound or a bag of white portland cement and do a German Schmear on the fireplace, Get a couple large sponges, a masons brush. grout bag, and some heavy rubber gloves.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfAQnG4LJhA
Personally, I would knock off that mantel and those support bricks jutting out and go for a smooth brick all the way up. Then you can add a mantel a bit lower out of a log or 4x4" piece of lumber, and some threaded bolts, drilling into the brick and the mantel lumber to epoxy it onto the fireplace.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip1ylTo4qMU&t=6s
I found this on Hometalk, I love how it brightens it up yet shows the brick still: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KHjri0Trik
