We had a small leak from our chimney that caused a small stain on our ceiling. The roof was fixed but the stain stays.
They can be painted after painting on a stain blocker like Kilz or use poly/varnish.
Ceiling tile are very porous. Be careful when painting they will chip and tear very easily. Kilz works but not always. I have repainted them and also used pre glued wallpaper. I had a leak in one corner of my kitchen. Prepasted wallpaper is a breeze to stick on. Wet according to instructions and slap on and let dry. Sticks well to the tiles. I swapped out the stained tiles with clean ones from another area of the ceiling and centered them or you could make a pattern one plain one patternened.
Poly/varnish will not cover stains. It will only darken your tiles and not match the rest.
I agree with paint as the first option. You could also cover them up with other tiles using glue. Do a search in Amazon for "faux tin tiles" and it will bring up a ton of glueable options in lots of different sizes.

You can paint them - I've done it. Use a primer first, though.
Do you know why they are stained? If you have a leak that is causing the staining then you would need to address that first so it won't happen again. Here is some info on fixing the stained ceiling tiles.

It may help to add a primer first if it is a water stain, then paint it again.

Hello there is a proprietary aersol spray paint product at the home improvement centers. It might be a solution to consider. It worked very well for our stain situation.
Hello. I would take the stained tile down and prime and paint it. If it doesn't exactly match the other tiles in the ceiling, switch it with a tile from a corner in the room. And put the painted tile in the place where you took the other tile down. You're simply switching one tile for the other.
You can spray paint with Kilz. That's probably the easiest and most affordable method.
