How to secure shelves on the wall?
I have an old mobile home. I would like to put some shelves for a cat to climb up to and sleep on. But I don't know how to secure them well enough so that they don't fall when the cat is on them?

Hi Kethy shelf brackets plus sheetrock anchors should work fine regardless of what your walls are made of. Look for shelf brackets that are plenty big enough for the size of the shelf boards you're using. Even large steel L brackets would also work. The key is the anchors that you'll be putting your screws into. You can purchase them by weight according to what they need to hold.
Use Molly bolts in the walls. They will make a secure connection, strong enough to hold the kitties.
Anchor screws will hold them in place, the kid that expand on the other side of the wall. However, if you remove them you will have a large hole in the wall.
You might check into a fairly new product : alien tape. I just purchased some last week and so far it is living up to it's reputation. It's an "as seen on tv" product by bell & howell. I've seen also on hsn & in dollar general stores.
To make them most secure, you will want to anchor them into a wall stud.
Hi! You will want to attach them to a stud - use a stud finder to locate. If it was just for a normal shelf you could get away with hollow wall anchors, but a cat jumping on them is a lot more weight.
Have you considered a floor to ceiling cat tree, that way you could avoid putting in multiple shelves:

Mobile homes have challenges that a stick built home doesn't have. I like the floor to ceiling cat climbing unit (or free standing - shorter) so you don't have to mess with the walls.
depending on the size of your cat, it could be tricky and with them jumping on things it could cause the shelf to fall if not secured properly here is another idea for you

Use anchors to secure
Hello Kathy,
Not really a good idea, but if you must, find the studs in the wall by knocking on the
walls. When you get a dull thud sound you will have found a stud. Fix to that!
Use anchors to secure the shelf. You can get advice on installing them and the correct ones to use from employees at any hardware store.
