Cover with contact paper or sit inside a nice large basket.
you could decopodge it using paper, fabric or even better just buy a basket large enough to hold the planter
another idea is to wrap rope or twine around the pot using glue to hold it in place

You failed to mention the dimensions. Tall, heavy duty plastic, round, square we could find good uses if we had an idea of what you had and how sturdy it is. Like is it sturdy enough to attach a piece of wood and make a foot stool or small enough to decorate and make a vase?
Paint is the easiest option. Be sure to clean it well and use a spray paint for multi-surfaces.
You could embellish it with mosaics for a beautiful unique look. Some nice ideas here, take a look:

If you don't care for the plastic look, your planter can b wrapped with jute which comes in various sizes, yarn, or even a beautiful fabric of your choice. You could also decorate with flat glass marbles, paint it with a monogram, or many other ideas. Just decide the "mood" you'd like to set in your room. No rules and no barriers! Have fun with it!
