Hi Nancy
I assume you are talking about cleaning the inside of the dishwasher so here is some info:https://www.mrappliance.com/blog/2018/september/how-to-clean-a-smelly-dishwasher/
if you mean the outside use cleaners like windex, Mr Clean Freak or anything mild to clean the outside and don't forget to wipe down the inside of the door
Hi Nancy, make sure and check out the filter that is in the bottom of most dishwashers. Mine is round and unscrews, I make sure and clean it out at least once a month. Besides that, as monthly maintenance, I put a bowl with half a cup of bleach in the bottom rack and run the dishwasher empty besides the bleach. How to Clean the Dishwasher Naturally
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine. Run the dishwasher through a hot-water cycle. This will wash away grease and grime and remove musty odors, too. Baking soda rinse: Sprinkle one cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher.
Put a drinking glass of vinegar on the top shelf, it will fill and replace the vinegar gradually as the cycle progresses with hot water and clean the d/w. For the rest of the d/w put baking soda in the bottom, it will clean the scrubbing cycle.
Find the filter, take it out and give that a good cleaning. After that, place a cup filled with vinegar on the top rack and run an empty load. Should be vastly improved.

How to Clean Your Dishwasher Naturally
After making sure the dishwasher is free of any food particles, place a cup of white cleaning vinegar in an open dishwasher safe container on the upper rack and run a short hot cycle. The sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the unit and run another short hot cycle. This will clean, sanitize, and make it sparkle.
Prior to adding detergent, put one (1) drop of blue Dawn in the dispenser. You will be amazed at how much better your dishes will look, especially glasses and plastic.
If you have an older dishwasher some don't have filters. My previous dishwasher didn't have a filter and I looked and looked cause I thought they all did.

Hello. Hard-water staining, I use the commercial dishwasher tablets as directed.

Hi Nancy,
Throw a Dishwasher Tablet in the machine and run it on Hot with nothing in it! Good luck!
Cleaning dishwashers can be nasty. We remove all the racks, then remove the sctreens in the bottom. You may need a screw driver or a wrench. Remove any trapped sludge. At the bottom of the door there should also be removable rubber seals, take them out and clean. Put them back in. Then , with the screens still removed, we pour some CLR in the dishwasher, and let sit for a bit, then run it on a quick hot wash. Reinstall the screens and you are good to go.
Depending on how heavily encrusted certain parts of the dishwasher may be, a 'cleaning' tablet may not be sufficient. You may need to scrub some of the little parts and small areas with a toothbrush.
They make a cleaner called Scum Off. You use on empty dishwasher and run through a cycle. directions on bottle.
