Hi Tina because its on a ceiling I would definitely just paint it. Paint and carpet can be a weird mix if its under foot but because its overhead I think it would look great and be a lot less messy than trying to dye it!
You could use a spray version of dye. My daughter has done it a few times on other fabrics besides carpet and it turned out great.
Here's an article that I think you will find helpful:

You absolutely can spray paint carpet. Simply spray painting your carpet can make an old room look new and give your home the facelift it needs. ... However, Simply Spray Upholstery Fabric Paint allows you to spray paint your carpet in an affordable, non-toxic way.
you could use fabric spay paint from the auto parts store. But messy overhead. You can use 50/50 watered down paint. Roller and brush needed. Possible with liquid RIT dye. It would need to be diluted per instructions.

If you are concerned about the look and have never done this before you might look into having a professional dye the carpet.
If you want to try this yourself look into renting a machine to spray it on. But be prepared for some mess a good tarp will be needed.
Since you had a stained area, I would hesitate to dye it for fear it may come out uneven or be visible. Fabric paint or latex would work, roll it on.
Hello. I hope you can find some good advice here. I tried this a few years ago we took up an oriental type carpet that was over the wall to wall and the area beneath the oriental style carpet had dye transfer stains below.
I think artificial fibers and carpets have stain resistant properties in them and the dye did not absorb well. It might be a job left to professionals..
Here's a post that might help - https://www.ritdye.com/faq/can-i-dye-carpet/#:~:text=We%20do%20not%20recommend%20dyeing,needed%20to%20apply%20the%20dye.
Rit dye is for natural fibers so unless the carpet is cotton or otherwise natural, it won't work. You can find dyes for synthetic fibers at a fabric store or online. Do a small test in a hidden spot first.
I'm afraid dye would not hide the stains. I think paint would be the better choice for this job. You could use latex paint without conditioner for a more even final result. Check the acceptability of the color on a sample portion. If the color is acceptable, paint the carpet as planned. If the color is not acceptable, it can easily be painted over. You may need to give it a couple coats. If so, be sure to give each coat time to dry completely. Latex paint without conditioner dries quickly.
Hi Tina, I don't think Rit Dye will work to hide/fix your water stained carpet ceiling. Painting is probably a better option. This video will give some guidance on how to do it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nCniAJk1JI
Hi there,
If the carpet was fitted after leaks were fixed, the carpet has absorbed the damp, so let it dry out and then try using a steam cleaner on it, mind you, I have no experience of this myself. If that doesn't shift it, you can only use a stain blocker from the paint department and then paint it.
Painting would be a better option.
I'd just put a rug over it
