How to remove black mastic from concrete floor?
Has anyone been successful in removing black mastic from a basement concrete floor? Previous owner used this adhesive on 150 sq ft of concrete base. Can you tell me what product you used to remove?

It will likely take some type of commercial solvent to remove the mastic. I'd check with a commercial flooring company in your area to see if they might have some advice.
That’s a great question, will have to follow the replies here. We had at a prior residence with vinyl adhesive stuck to the concrete basement floor. We easily removed the avocado green 1970s sheet vinyl but adhesive were a significant problem. It was a tough task to manually scrape off.
Here are 3 different ways to remove mastic:

One concern might be there is asbestos in the mastic, you might want to get a professional opinion or several, it might be more advisable to cover it than to remove it.
Hi Cornelia. Pour a small amount of a cheap laundry detergent mixed with hot water onto the floor. Some tar-based adhesives will dissolve or soften in the presence of soap. After that you will have to chisel off the mastic. Once the mastic is wet, it should be easier to break off in chunks. You can use a hammer and a chisel for this job. Good luck Cornelia. Happy Holidays.
Since it's black mastic there's a good chance it contains asbestos. I would consult a professional to remove it safely.
Hello there,
Obviously previous Owner laid this down to stop rising damp. Are you sure you want to remove it?
We scraped and then used a solvent to remove mastic from my mother in law's basement floor several years ago. We had a floor scraper that you can stand upright and I'm pretty sure we used straight acetone.

Acetone from the hardware store will take it off with a scraper. BUT be sure to use it in a well ventilated area.

I would check with home depot
This will be a task. Perhaps a sharp metal scraper. Or using a belt sander may be the best, but verry messy. Wear dust mask if you choose that option..
I found this, but you need to find a product called Blue Bear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6lx2A6LfMY
We sanded ours off and it took forever, but was well worth it.
Chisel and Bolster, goggles and thick gloves.
Start scrubbing the mastic with your acetone-soaked brush until the glue melts and lifts from the concrete. Wipe the mastic away with a clean cloth as you go, and clean the concrete once you're finished with a mop and water. You can also attempt to use paint thinners, turpentine, or WD-40, but be careful.
