How can I paint a hollow core coffee table and make it last?
I bought a hollow core coffee table from Walmart a while back and would like to paint a scene from a movie on it for a gift. I’ve already sanded and primed it. Any suggestions on the type of paint I should use? I only need white, black and yellow. Also what would be best to seal it? I’d hate to spend hours painting this just to have it scratch all off!

I would use acrylic paint and seal it with polycrylic.
You can use clear spray paint to seal it. I wouldn't use polyurethane as it will turn yellowish and show up over white paint.
I normally use regular interior house paint on furniture and I've never had any issues with scratching off. Not the case with chalked paint. As for sealing, you may want to have either a piece of glass or plastic cut to fit but if you want to use a brush on make sure it is a water based like polycrylic to prevent yellowing. Please share when you are finished, I would love to see it.
Hello. Sounds like an exciting project. After that nice primer coat hopefully you have a smooth surface I would suggest using acrylic paints. They can be found it found at Walmart in the craft department. I particularly like the multi-purpose line but you should choose the paints with the sheen that you desire- could be matte satin or gloss.
I have use these types of paints in many decorative applications painted items including corn hole boards and pallets that I sealed with poly acrylic
Hi there I would consider an oil based paint for your project because of the base you're working with. Its really pretty stinky and more thick then regular paint but I've found it lasts a lot longer and provides a much tougher surface!
I recommend priming furniture first to lock the tannins in and create better adherence. For the base/background, you can use chalk paint, then use a good quality acrylic craft paint for your painted designs. Craft paint is inexpensive, so buy the best. I recommend Delta Ceramcoat for the best quality---stay away from the cheap brands like Apple Barrel and Craftsmart because the pigment % is not as high (there really is a big difference in those craft paint brands). Finish up with 3 coats of a good top coat. I like General Finishes water based top coat---but don't use it on a light color or white painted piece as it can yellow. For any light colored pieces, I use water-based Minwax Polycrylic. Good luck!
The most durable paint is a oil based enamel. But you can use a good latex too. You can seal with a spray on clear coat or perhaps get a piece of glass to cover the top.
Acrylic latex paint. Regular wall paint. You can buy small sample containers at the homecenter. Use a sponge roller and sponge paint brush to get a smooth finish. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane. I use Minwax. I painted a hall table last year and it's holding up well. Might repaint it since my taste has changed.
Here is a site that explains different finishes and how to apply them:

Hi Andrea, you can use acrylic paints, and then seal it with Mod Podge, or put some glass over the art, use rubber dots to keep the glass from sliding around. they come in several sizes

Use an oil based paint and seal it. Sounds beautiful!
I would get a spray seal and do a couple of couts
Use latex but seal it with acrylic primer
Chalk paint and seal with polycrylic
I would seal one of two ways. Either spray on lacquer in a matt finish or I would have a piece of acrylic or glass cut at Home Depot or Lowes to fit the top. If you use glass make sure you put the little bumpers on the corner.
Lots of good suggestions, here's a great piece about sealers. https://www.lovelyetc.com/the-best-and-worst-sealers-for-painted-furniture/
Acrylic paint would be easiest then a water based sealer or clear spray will do the trick. Use several light coats of sealer for the best durability.
I would use acrylic and then seal it with a sealer
