In the past, I've had great success with Brasso. However, if you want to go with an alternative option a baking soda & white vinegar paste rubbed with a soft toothbrush, wait 30 minutes, then clean off.
For brass that has not been sealed with a clear coat, any acidic product will help to clean it. Some people use vinegar, some catsup because of the vinegar in it, or use a commercial product such as brasso. Apply whatever product, let sit for several minutes then scrub with a soft cloth, rinse and wipe dry with a different soft cloth.

I always use a generic metal polish, but ketchup will also do the trick!
I have always used Brasso on unsealed brass or salt and vinegar scrub. For sealed brass, use automobile compound.

Toothpaste helps whiten your teeth, and you can use that same cleaning magic on brass. To clean brass with toothpaste, first pick a plain, white toothpaste (you don't need any gels or fancy flavors). Then, apply a thin layer of the paste to your brass object. Let rest for a few minutes, then polish with a clean cloth. For tough spots, you'll likely need to use a little force. Feel free to apply extra dabs of toothpaste to particularly stubborn areas. Once the brass is polished to your liking, rinse with cool water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
These versatile home staples can be combined to make a paste to clean tarnished brass. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt into one-half cup of vinegar, and add flour until the mixture becomes a paste. Rub into the brass, leave for about 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and buff dry.
