Nightstand Makeover
I was in need of a new nightstand for my bedroom so I found a vintage piece that I really loved and decided to give it a little style.
I started by removing the hardware and giving the entire thing a light and quick sanding.
Next I sprayed the metal in the doors with gold spray paint. I decided to do this step first and just paint over the gold overspray instead of having to tape off the entire thing once I was done painting to spray the gold.
I decided on a pretty muted blue called "Prom Queen".
Next I cut a piece of high quality gift wrap to use on the inside. While there are a ton of methods and products to decoupage I usually use Super 77 adhesive spray to glue the paper down first.
I rolled up the paper with the design inside and sprayed the back third of the wood surface. Once I lined up the paper perfect I unrolled and smoothed it with my hand. Then I continued with the adhesive spray on the rest of the surface.
Next, I coated the paper with Mod Podge to seal everything up and make it more durable.
I decided to wax the entire piece, except the top. While I love the look and texture that I get from wax, it's just not super durable for a surface that will get a decent amount of use. For the top, I applied two coats of water based polyurethane in a satin finish.
For the finishing touches, I sprayed the hardware in the same shiny gold and custome mixed a yellowish green for the drawer that I pulled from one of the colors in the paper. With the cost of the nightstand at $40 I used about $10-15 in additional materials for a totally custom look. Thanks for following along with this fun makeover. I agree with you 100%, don't buy new which is usually MDF, not wood. You found a lonely piece which begged for you to buy.
You did an outstanding job on this darling creation. Congrat!!!!!
